Apostles' Inner Conflict and Jesus' Change in Tactics
Time and again Jesus had dashed the hopes of his apostles. He had repeatedly crushed their fondest expectations. But nothing had ever equaled what overtook them that day. Mixed in with their depression was a real fear for their safety. They were startled and surprised by how suddenly and completely the people had deserted them. They were also somewhat concerned and frightened by the unexpected assertiveness of the Pharisees who had come down from Jerusalem. But most of all, they were bewildered by Jesus' sudden change in tactics. Under ordinary circumstances, they would have welcomed this more militant attitude. But coming as it did along with so much that was unexpected, it startled them.
