The value of repetition
Jesus understood that people prepare themselves for meeting challenges and performing heroic deeds by the slow process of continually having to choose between good and evil. In the past he had forced his disciples to repeatedly choose between these two, and he had well-rehearsed them in disappointment. Jesus knew that by them having developed these spiritual habits he could count on his followers to make the right choice when they would be met with their final test. While this sermon ended this particular crisis in Jesus’ life, it began a crisis in the apostles lives that continued for a whole year only ending with Jesus’ crucifixion.
